Abstract :

Statement of the Problem: The Nigerian health sector faces intricate human resource challenges in inter-professional friction among healthcare workers. The problems arise from each profession defending its boundaries because of poor knowledge of team building. Very few studies investigated the aspect of assessing knowledge on team building between healthcare workers in two federal tertiary health facilities. The purpose of this study is to compare knowledge of team building between healthcare workers in two federal tertiary health facilities in different geopolitical zones. Methodology and Theoretical Orientation: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study using multistage sampling technique to select subjects from ten categories of health professionals working in two zones. The Health Belief Model was the framework adopted to focus respondents on the need for team building knowledge. Results: This consisted of respondents that heard of team, those that heard of inter-professional team composition, those that defined correctly team building, those that defined correctly inter-professional team building , those with sources of information, those that defined correctly a team, those that had good knowledge of competencies to possess to be an effective team member. Conclusion and Significance: Proportion of respondents for variables were higher for South-South geopolitical zone than South-East geopolitical zone tertiary health facility though with no statistical significant difference across all seven variables. Recommendations are made for needs assessment of team building knowledge be done for healthcare workers in health facilities located in different geopolitical zones before team building institutionalization in line with the National Health Policy 2016 of Nigeria.
