Biography

Prof Stephanie Atkinson received her PhD in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Toronto followed by a post-doctoral fellowship in Endocrinology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Currently, she is working as full Professor in Pediatrics and Associate Member of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She has successfully completed Administrative responsibilities as Associate Chair of Research in Pediatrics. Her research has included investigations of the factors influencing skeletal development in infants and children with bone disorders secondary to pediatric diseases or drug therapy such as premature infants, and pediatric clinical disease populations such as children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), nephrosis, rheumatoid disorders, cystic fibrosis or epilepsy. Currently, her research program is focused on investigations of the environmental (nutrition), genetic and biochemical factors during fetal, neonatal and early childhood life that are important as risk determinants for chronic diseases. Such research includes a prospective, longitudinal birth cohort study to follow children to 10 years of age that focuses on early determinants of obesity, diabetes, and risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis; and randomized clinical trials in pregnancy designed to examine maternal and child health outcomes in response to nutrition + exercise interventions. Based on this research and fellowship training she has received several awards and honors, such as: the McHenry Award from the Canadian Society for Nutritional Sciences (1998), the Earle W. Crampton Award from McGill University (1998), the Ryley-Jeff’s Memorial Award from the Dietitians of Canada (2006), the Danone Institute Distinguished Nutrition Leadership Award (2008), the Carmelle Murphy Alumnae Award of Distinction from Brescia University College and a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of her dedicated service to her peers, community and to Canada. She is also an elected Fellow in the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and the American Society for Nutrition and currently serves as Chair of the Institute Advisory Board of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes. She is serving as an editorial member of several reputed journals like Nutrition Reviews and Nutrition today and formerly with the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. She serves as an expert Reviewer for journals like Journal of Nutrition, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Pediatrics, J Pediatrics, Journal of Developmental Origins of Disease, Bone, Obesity among others. Dr. Atkinson has authored 172 research articles and book chapters. She is a member of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, American Society for Nutrition, American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, Canadian Nutrition Society, Osteoporosis Canada, International Life Sciences Institute and Dietitians of Canada.
