Biography

 Dr. Charles W. Sponsel serves as Assistant Professor and Clerkship Director in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Dr. Sponsel received dual degrees in biology and chemistry from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1977. He then earned his Masters in Science in environmental science from the University of Texas at Dallas. Dr. Sponsel completed osteopathic school at the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center in Fort Worth and finished residency at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Odessa (TTUHSC-PB) in 1992.

After his residency, Dr. Sponsel joined the faculty at TTUHSC-PB part-time while also practicing rural medicine and urgent care. Over the course of fifteen years, Dr. Sponsel has served many roles within the family medicine department including Program Director and Interim Chair. Dr. Sponsel is a member of several state and national organizations including the American Academy of Family Physicians, Texas Academy of Family Physicians and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.

Dr. Sponsel has special interests in rural medicine, palliative care, and medical student education.
