Abstract :

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by hyperandrogenism and chronic anovulation that affects 6% to 20% of women at the reproductive age. During our research, basic information such as age, weight and height of the patients were collected. We also determined hormone levels: FSH, LH, prolactin, TSH, estradiol, 17-OH progesterone, SHBG, DHEA-S, androstendione, testosterone. Insulin and glucose were also measured to assess the presence of insulin resistance. Gynecological history included the duration of menstrual disorders, their nature and severity. The presence of hirsutism and acne was checked as well as previous treatment. Ovarian ultrasound was also evaluated to confirm the presence of PCOS. Using statistical analysis, the collateralization of these characteristics between patients with PCOS and a control group, as well as with a group of patients with menstrual problems on a different background, was examined. A total of 143 female patients aged between 11 and 18 years participated in the study. Among all the examined patients, 24 were the control group. In the research group, 63 patients had been diagnosed with absent, scanty or rare menstruation (N91) and ovarian dysfunction (E28), only 21 had ovarian dysfunction, and 33 had absent, scanty or rare menstruation without ovarian dysfunction. In this group, 65 patients were diagnosed with hirsutism and 59 with acne. 72 patients were diagnosed with insulin resistance, 46 of whom were taking metformin. 26 patients were also taking medication for hypothyroidism. As for hormone treatment, 39 patients were using oral contraception and 70 were taking cyclic gestagens.
