Lepromatous Leprosy

Early detection of the disease is of utmost consequentiality, since rigorous physical and neurological damage are irreversible even if remedied (e.g. optical incapacitation, loss of digits/limbs/sensation). Early infection is characterized by a well demarcated, customarily pale, skin lesion which has lost its hair, and there may be many of these lesions if the infection is more rigorous (most commonly found on the cooler components of the body such as the elbows, knees, fingers, or scrotum, as the bacteria thrive in cooler environments). This early presentation is identically tantamount for both tuberculous and lepromatous forms of leprosy as they are a spectrum of the same disease (lepromatous being the more contagious and rigorous form in patients with impaired Th1 replication). Disease progression is profoundly slow, and designations of infection may not appear for years. Lepromatous leprosy is characterized by multiple skin lesions that are more diminutive than those optically canvassed in tuberculoid leprosy. Albeit the sites of skin lesions are kindred to those of tuberculoid leprosy, the multiple lesions of lepromatous leprosy are often symmetrically distributed. Lepromatous macules may have poorly defined borders and no loss of sensation; local nerve enlargement is not characteristic. In additament to macules, lepromatous skin lesions may be nodules or plaques, or they may diffusely infiltrate the skin, especially on the face (which may cause loss of eyebrows and leonine facies). There may be sempiternal medical complications despite a prosperous course of antibiotics, but your medico will be able to work with you to provide opportune care in order to avail you cope with and manage any residual conditions.
