Biography
Richard J. Butler graduated with a Bachelors in Economics from the University of Utah in 1973. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1979, where his thesis committee included Nobel Prize winners James Heckman and T.W. Shultz. While completing his PhD, he worked as an instructor of economics at DePaul University and an instructor of labor economics at Cornell University. After finishing his degree, he took a position as an assistant professor of labor economics at Cornell from 1979 to 1982. In 1982, he began working in the BYU Economics Department.
