Abstract :

Quantitative neuroimaging in general and more specifically brain MRI volumetry is a relatively new available method that can be used to clinically assess changes in the brain. This method is shown to detect brain loss associated with neurodegenerative disorders that are so fine, that it can be difficult to detect and follow them over time for the unaided eye. The diseases of interest here are Alzheimer's disease, Mesial Temporal Sclerosis and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. The aim of this talk is to present the findings of using a brain volume assessment tool in the diagnostic process for the above listed neurodegenerative disorders. I shall first present how such a tool works and how it is implemented in the clinical workflow. We will then look at several neurological disorders and list the findings resulting from the use of a brain volumetry assessment. Finally, we will list and discuss the limits of brain volumetry assessment in the clinic.
