Abstract :

Cervicogenic dizziness is defined as a non-specific sensation of altered orientation in space and disequilibrium related to either movements or positions of the cervical spine occuring with pain or/and stiffness in the neck. This systematic review aimed at briefly exploring how effective acupuncture therapy combined with manual therapy for cervicogenic dizziness. We searched publications in Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and China Integrated Knowledge Resources Database through to March 30, 2017. We included randomized controlled trials that compared the effects of acupuncture and manual therapies with any controls for cervical dizziness. Five studies have been included with eligibility criteria. Risk of bias assessments showed mostly â??unclearâ? because the included study reported the results poorly. In subgroup meta-analysis, the effective rate of acupuncture therapy combined with manual therapy for cervicogenic dizziness showed 2.89 of odds ratio, compared with nonspecific medications [95% CI=1, 69-4.97, random effect model], while 4.97 of odds ratio compared with herbal medications [95% CI=2.63-9.38, random effect model]. In conclusion, acupuncture therapy combined with manual therapy could be beneficial for cervicogenic dizziness, compared with medication, however, it is not conclusive because of lack of study qualities. More qualified and well-reported rondomized controlled trial should be carried out in the future.
