Born and raised in Cracow (Poland), I graduated in medicine from the University of Hamburg and obtained his doctorate from the University of Freiburg in Breisgau (Germany). I then worked clinically in psychiatry, neurology and neurosurgery in Bern (Switzerland), Berlin and Cambridge. In 1995 I joined the cognitive neurology research group led by Prof. John Hodges at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit in Cambridge. There, I specialised in the interaction between motor and cognitive functions (including language and memory). In 1996, I established in Cambridge a clinic for the disorders of movement and cognition.
Since 2006 I have been working in the Department of Psychology, the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences and the Centre for Cognitive Aging and Cognitive Epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh. Apart from research and clinical work, I have been teaching undergraduates and graduate courses in neurosciences, medicine and psychology as well as courses for laymen. In 2008 I established the Edinburgh Interdisciplinary Seminars in Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences.
