Abstract

Breast Cancer

Dr. Syed A Aziz

Canada Breast cancer accounts for approximately a
fourth of all female cancers, being only second to skin
cancer. Although breast cancer is a disease found in both
males and females, 99% of breast cancer cases develop
in females. Several risk factors have been established,
including early menarche and late menopause. Despite
decades of research regarding its etiology, the source of
mammary carcinogenesis remains inconclusive. Recent
evidence of viral substance in oncogenic tumors suggests
the influence of viruses on human breast cancer’s etiology.
The prime candidates for human breast cancer are
the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), Epstein-Barr Virus
(EBV), and Mouse Mammary Tumor Virus (MMTV).
An additional candidate is the Bovine Leukemia Virus
(BLV). Viral genetic substance for all these candidates
was found in human breast cancer through a polymerase
chain reaction. This review will examine and assess recent
evidence-based literature on i) plausibility (results of preceding
research evidence), ii) consistency (a cohesive pattern
amongst all related studies from varying locations,
different researchers and different times), and iii) coherence
(all data is consistent with each other).
