Horseshoe Vortex

The horseshoe vortex model is a simplified representation of the vortex system of a wing. In this model the wing vorticity is modelled by a bound vortex of constant circulation, travelling with the wing, and two trailing wingtip vortices, therefore having a shape vaguely reminiscent of a horseshoe. The horseshoe vortex system is a simple vortex model for an aircraft or lifting body which fits a box-shaped vortex system out from the wing. This is made up of the wing vortex, trailing vortices and starting vortex. The latter is a vortex formed due to changes in the vorticity of the wing vortex, i.e. due to changes in airspeed. The horseshoe vortex system resulting from the interaction between a laminar boundary layer and a round transverse jet was studied over a range of Reynolds numbers and velocity ratios using hydrogen bubble wire visualization in a water channel. The study shows that the horseshoe vortex system can be steady, oscillating, or coalescing, depending on the flow conditions. This process encourages authors to meet the accepted standards of their discipline and reduces the dissemination of irrelevant findings, unwarranted claims, unacceptable interpretations, and personal views.
