Abstract

Production of Eco-friendly Bio-fertilizer, Biodiesel Byproducts and Electricity from Food Waste.

Mr. Siddalinga Nuchhi, Mr. Vinaykumar Bagali

One third of food produced for human consumption is disposed as food waste that poses a threat for the global economy and environment. Source reduction and reuse is the preferred option in the food waste management hierarchy. The combined fuel and value products from food waste are considered as raw materials and highly feasible under integrated bio-refinery concepts. High amount of bio-waste generated from canteen, hostels and restaurants etc., are considered for production of Bio-fertilizer, Biodiesel, Biomass, Electricity, Bio-fuel. Bio-fertilizers produced are considered as alternative to chemical fertilizers in agricultural sector due to their extensive potentiality in enhancing yield of crop and food safety. Another alternative is to convert the biogas to electricity, which can be accomplished with either combustion engines or gas turbines. Meanwhile, the waste cooking oil can be used for production of a number of value added industrial chemicals/feed stocks/ fuels/bio-products like lipids and fatty acids used in cosmetics could be produced through bio-refinery approach.
