Knowledge on Hepatitis B among Secondary School Students

 Hepatitis B virus is the blood burn communicable disease and the ninth leading cause of death worldwide. About 2 million people worldwide have been infected with the hepatitis B virus and about 350 million live with chronic infection. This study entitled “Knowledge on Hepatitis B among Secondary School Students” was carried out in Chhorepatan Higher Secondary School, Pokhara. A cross sectional descriptive research design was used to as­sess knowledge on Hepatitis B among Secondary School Students. The total 100 students were selected using sim­ple random method. Self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. The obtained data was coded and analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.The study reveals that cent percent respondents heard about Hepatitis B, only 13 percent had good level of knowledge on Hepatitis B. The most common source of information was teacher (42%). Majority (87%) of the respondents mentioned that Hepatitis B is caused by virus. Likewise, fever was most common sign and symptoms mentioned by the 52 percent of respondents. Majority (87%) of the respondents reported that hepatitis B is a preventable disease.This study concluded that respondents had poor knowledge regarding Hepatitis B. This may be the result of inadequate information about communicable diseases in the course and insufficient awareness of teachers and guardians. So It is must important to increase awareness among students on Hepatitis B through IEC materials and mass media.
