Abstract

Follicular Unit Extraction: An effective technique for Hair Transplant

Syed M Ammar Y Jaffry

Follicular Unit Extraction technique also commonly known as FUE has almost replaced the old-style method of hair transplant using the strip method (FUT) to harvest the hairs or transplantation. Our study involved patients undergoing hair transplant a between Jan 2015- Dec 2017 We used the latest Automated FUE technique to harvest the hair follicular units in a series of 30 patients with different indications and evaluated the results after one year of follow-up. It was possible to harvest more than 2000 grafts in each patient in a single session without leaving any obvious linear scar on the occipital region. In all the patients we found FUE an effective tool to achieve best results in terms of naturalness, good number of hairs and overall patient satisfaction. We concluded FUE as an effective tool to achieve best results in terms of naturalness, good number of hairs and overall patient satisfaction. In hair transplantation, the survival rate of harvested grafts depends upon many factors like maintenance of hydration, cold temperature, reduced mechanical handling and asepsis. All these factors are favourably improved if time out of body is reduced significantly. We have tried a modification called direct hair transplantation in the existing follicular unit extraction technique, in which the follicular unit grafts are implanted as soon as they are harvested. In this article, we have described the detailed methodology and a series of 29 patients who underwent direct hair transplantation..
